Italy hands over two patrol boats to Libyan coastguards

Nova news agency reported Friday that the Italian Defense Industries Agency had delivered two (Corrubia) naval boats on Thursday to the technical delegation of the Libyan Coast Guard as part of the project to support integrated management of borders and immigration in Libya.

According to the Agency’s press release, the two boats – which are undergoing preventive maintenance operations by the agency workers – are part of the agency’s technical agreement with the Ministry of Interior, the Central Directorate of Immigration, and the Border Police.

The handover ceremony of the boats, which preceded the signing of the official report, took place in the presence of representatives of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, the Central Directorate for Immigration and Border Police, the Libyan Technical Commission, the Defense Industries Agency, and the Italian Financial Police.

The patrol boats, which will be handed over to the Libyan authorities as part of a European project, are set to be at the core of anti-trafficking and border control activities, allowing the Libyan Coast Guard to support European operations to secure the Mediterranean waters.
