The Libyan ambassador to the United Nations, Taher El Sonni, has welcomed efforts of the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) Prosecutor, Karim Khan, and his briefing to the Security Council – delivered from Libya for the first time.
El Sonni stated during the Security Council session that Libya hoped the ICC investigation would be speedy in order to complete the case and give victims of crimes in Libya the justice they aspired for.
He said that they had convened 28 sessions over the last 13 years and all was in vain if compared to the results coming out of those sessions regarding the Libyan situation.
El Sonni reiterated that cooperation with the ICC was based on completion of visions and efforts, adding that the Libyan Attorney General’s Office “is capable of investigating crimes within the country’s border and beyond.”
He also called for publicizing an arrest warrant of six persons implicated in crimes in the city of Tarhouna and informing the countries to which those individuals escaped about the necessity of turning them to justice.
Meanwhile, El Sonni reminded the ICC of the ongoing genocide in Gaza, saying it would remain under the accusation of double standards if it hadn’t taken a decision regarding the war criminals leading the war against Gaza.
