Libyan PM decides to remove fuel subsidies

The Libyan Prime Minister, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, has issued a decision to remove fuel subsidies, saying in a meeting with the Committee of Hydrocarbons that the reason behind his decision is the reports of from international bodies and control authorities within Libya, let alone the reports of the central Bank of Libya.

This decision by Dbeibah takes the government back to three previous proposals made by the Ministry of Economy. The first was to increase the price of fuel by 100% for the liter of gasoline to become 0.30 dirhams instead of 0.15.

The second proposal was increasing the price of gasoline to 0.45 dirhams and diesel to 0.30 per liter to save 2 billion dinars. While the third proposal is raising the liter price of fuel to 0.60 dirhams and diesel to 0.45 to save 4 billion dinars.

The Government of National Unity discussed on a number of occasions the removal of fuel subsidies but without making a decision. Meanwhile, the Head of the Audit Bureau, Khalid Shakshak, said at a meeting for the GNU that removing fuel subsidies “is a national duty” given the prices in nearby countries.
