Norland says unilateral actions on CBL and oil shutdown in Libya are worrying

The US Special Envoy to Libya Richard Norland has expressed concern about the recent “unilateral actions” in Libya, especially the Presidential Council’s decision to dismiss the governor of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) in Tripoli, and the subsequent response by what he called the “eastern Libya camp” to close some oil fields and ports.

Norland stressed in an interview with “Youm7” – an Egyptian newspaper – the need for Libyan parties to focus on resolving the Central Bank crisis so that it does not turn into a “vicious circle” that affects the economic and political situation in the country, saying that everyone realizes the urgent need to reach a decision on the leadership of the CBL.

Norland called for the need for all Libyan political stakeholders to participate in a new and large-scale dialogue aimed at reaching compromise solutions that serve Libya’s interests, explaining that the US had not taken a position on who won the election of the High Council of State, calling for the need to resolve the dispute as soon as possible so that the High Council of State can play its required role.

Regarding the role of the US in Libya, Norland stressed that his country was working on a “new strategy” to prevent violence and enhance stability, noting that “murders and enforced disappearances due to differences in viewpoints” in Libya “raises concerns about the growing culture of impunity.”
