One dead, six injured in renewed clashes in Al-Zawiya city

The spokesman for the Ambulance and Emergency Apparatus, Osama Ali, has announced that reports point to the killing of one person and the injury of six others in Al-Zawiya due to clashes that have erupted earlier this morning.

The city of Al-Zawiya witnessed renewed clashes on Saturday between local armed groups. The clashes came on the heels of a protest by local residents in front of the Security directorate’s building denouncing the fragile security in the city.

University Students Union in Al-Zawiya has suspended classes due to the fighting and the Red Crescent office in the city called on warring groups to allow families safe corridors out of fighting zones.

Meanwhile, the Head of Al-Zawiya Elders Council, Mohammed Khamaj, told Libya Al-Ahrar TV channel that the Council was communicating with the fighting sides in order to reach a ceasefire or a truce of some sort.

Khamaj called on the relevant state authorities to intervene, saying the responsibility for stopping the fighting and violence in Al-Zawiya is in the hands of the government’s security forces.
