Members of the High Council of State (HCS) elected Mohamed Takala as Head in a session chaired by First Deputy Masoud Obeid, with about 70 members. The session, which took place on Tuesday, witnessed the absence of Takala’s rival for the position, Khalid Al-Mishri, and a large number of his supporters.
Takala competed with Idris Abu Fayed and Naima Al-Hami for the position. He received 55 votes, with 8 votes for Naima Al-Hami, 5 for Abu Fayed, and two blank ballots. In the same session, 49 members elected Masoud Obeid as the council’s first deputy, and 42 members elected Musa Faraj as the second deputy.
Meanwhile, Al-Mishri refused to recognize the election results, considering Takala’s re-election worthless and a way of reinforcing the current division.
HCS member Adel Karmous said that the UN mission informed Takala of the need to hold a session with the participation of all council members, to achieve a broader consensus, describing Tuesday’s session as representing a single political spectrum within the HCS.
