UNSG Guterres urges for information on fate of kidnapped MP Al-Dressi

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, called on the Libyan authorities to conduct transparent and fair investigations into all cases of death in custody and enforced disappearances in the country. He said in a report for the last four months of the year to the Security Council, that the fate of the member of the House of Representatives (HoR) Ibrahim Al-Dressi remained unknown.

Guterres added that he had documented Al-Dressi’s disappearance since last May, explaining that unlawful deprivation of liberty, including kidnappings, enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests and detentions, were still ongoing in Libya.

The report also indicated that cases of torture, ill-treatment and forced interrogation were recorded, in addition to incidents of unlawful killings and deaths in custody.

Al-Dressi’s fate remains unclear after more than 3 months of his kidnapping in Benghazi, amid the silence of the security forces affiliated with Khalifa Haftar, and the complete absence of demands to reveal his fate by his family and tribe in eastern Libya.
