the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has said it is alarmed by the disturbing footage circulating on social media, which shows brutal torture and ill-treatment of detainees at the Garnada detention facility in eastern Libya.
“The videos depict numerous detainees, both Libyan and foreign nationals, subjected to violent beatings, forced into stress positions by guards in uniform. This footage is consistent with documented patterns of human rights violations in detention facilities across Libya.” UNSMIL said in a statement on Tuesday.
As UNSMIL continues to verify the circumstances of the circulated footage, it strongly condemns these acts that constitute serious violations of international human rights law, including the prohibition of torture. We call for an immediate and transparent investigation into these alleged violations and for perpetrators to be brought to justice.
UNSMIL has also said it is coordinating with the General Command of the Libyan National Army for unrestricted access to UNSMIL’s human rights officers and other independent monitors to the Garnada facility as well as other detention centers under their control.
