The UN Secretary General’s Advisor on Libya, Stephanie Williams, has reiterated that the UN will stand by the Libyan people in their demand for an electoral process to end the long transitional period.
In a tweet on Wednesday, Williams added that she also stressed the need for determined efforts to push forward on national reconciliation and transitional justice.
These remarks came as Williams met with a number of representatives of the Political Parties Consortium who demanded that the will of the 2.8 million Libyans who registered to vote must not be usurped.
Earlier on Wednesday, Williams with the Head of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Sayeh, and board member, Mr. Abdul Hakim Al-Shaab, saying they had discussed ways to consolidate and strengthen efforts to keep the electoral process moving forward.
Williams reiterated on Twitter the full support of the United Nations and of the international community to the HNEC as an independent institution in charge of the electoral process.
“The holding of inclusive, free, fair, and credible national elections in Libya is the only possible response to the overwhelming and consistent demand of the Libyan people and the only path to peace and stability in Libya.” Williams reiterated.
