The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said in a statement the number of its nationals who died in the floods after Storm Daniel hit eastern Libya amounted to 23, adding that tens of families were reported missing.
The Palestinian Foreign Affairs’ Advisor, Ahmed Al-Deek, said several Palestinian families had found some of their relatives alive after escaping the floods.
“We need more time to identify the bodies that wash up the shore. We need also to have accurate numbers of deaths as DNA sampling is not going well.” Al-Deek said.
He said the Palestinian Foreign Ministry was following closely the latest developments regarding the community in eastern Libya.
Storm Daniel hit eastern coastal cities, especially Derna, Al-Bayda and Al-Marj, on Saturday. Two dams collapsed in Derna valley, washing away entire neighborhoods and killing entire families. The flood torrent obliterated around a quarter or the Mediterranean city of Derna.
