Turkey welcomes selection of new Libyan executive authority

Turkey welcomed Friday the recent political developments in Libya represented in the election of an interim Presidential Council and Prime Minister to govern the country until general elections in December.

“We welcome the designation of the President and members of the Presidency Council and the Prime Minister who will serve until the general elections that are scheduled to be held on 24 December 2021 in Libya, as a result of the elections held in the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF),” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“We hope that the new Government of National Unity will be formed and take office as soon as possible on the basis of the Road Map adopted by the LPDF,” the ministry added.

Reiterating Turkey’s support for democracy, security, and stability in Libya, the ministry called on the international community not to tolerate developments and actors who might spoil the political solution in the country.

Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) members cast votes Friday in Geneva and finally agreed to select the Head and members of the Presidential Council as well as the new Prime Minister of the Libyan executive authority that will lead to general elections on December 24, 2021.

After individual voting failed, four lists that included candidates for the top Libyan executive authority positions were presented for the positions to run the executive authority in the upcoming interim period.

The winning list received 39 votes and it included Mohammed Menfi (representative of the east), as Head of the Presidential Council; Mossa Al-Koni, member representative of the south; Abdullah Al-Lafi, member representative of the west and Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah, as Prime Minister.
