Libyan Army forces in Al-Zawiya city in western Libya released on Wednesday 120 captives taken from Khalifa Haftar’s militias to solidify a months-long ceasefire and moves towards national unity and reconciliation.
Forces in Al-Zawiya released the 120 prisoners from Haftar’s militia Brigade 107 in a ceremony held in the city in the presence of Government of National Unity and other local and military dignitaries, including the Head of the High Council of State, Khalid Al-Mishri.
The prisoners had been held since April 2019 when Haftar launched an aggression to seize control of the capital, Tripoli, and other areas in the northwest, ending with his retreat last June.
Last October, Libyan parties agreed to a ceasefire agreement after talks in Geneva, setting off political talks that led to agreement in early March on a new unity government to operate in the west, east and south.
The step comes after the call of the member of the Presidential Council, Mossa Al-Koni, for the release of prisoners held in eastern and southern areas as a gesture of reconciliation and unity.
