Doctors Without Borders: 61% of migrants in Libya have been subjected to torture

Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) reported that 61% of the detained migrants in Libya whom the organization is following up on, were subjected to torture, and 20% were subjected to sexual abuse.

The Italian AKI agency quoted the organization as saying that the acts of violence suffered by migrants and refugees include “punches, kicks, flogging with cables, and cauterization with fire,” in addition to sexual abuse.

The organization added that the torture committed contributes to the demoralization of individuals as it is practiced at different levels. It clarified that it had received approximately 194 people between January 2021 and September 2023, 57 of them during this year alone.

The organization indicated that detention facilities in Libya and elsewhere are the main places where acts of violence occur, accounting for 58% of cases according to their records.
