The Embassies of France, the United Kingdom, and the United States expressed, following consultations in Tunis on Sunday, their full support for the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya’s (UNSMIL) Officer in Charge Stephanie Koury to bring the Libyan parties together to resolve the ongoing Central Bank of Libya’s (CBL) crisis.
“At stake is the economic and financial stability of Libya. As the parties prepare to resume their talks with UNSMIL facilitation tomorrow, we urge them rapidly to reach the necessary compromises to begin to restore the institutional integrity and stability of the CBL and its standing with the international financial community.” The Embassies said in a joint statement.
They also encouraged all sides to work for longer-term agreements on the distribution of Libya’s oil revenues for the benefit of all Libya’s citizens.
“At this critical moment, it is essential that all sides avoid further unilateral actions that risk undermining Libya’s stability and instead take meaningful steps to de-escalate.” The statement reads.
Following consultations hosted by UNSMIL at its headquarters in Tripoli on last Monday and Tuesday, representatives of the House of Representatives (HoR) and the High Council of State (HCS) reached important understandings on the crisis of the CBL, particularly on the mechanism and deadlines for appointing the CBL governor and board of directors.
UNSMIL added in a statement that the representatives of the HoR and HCS requested five days to complete their consultations and reach a final consensus on the necessary arrangements for managing the CBL until a new governor and board of directors are appointed.
However, on September 09, the five-day deadline ended and the HoR representative Al-Hadi Al-Sahgeer told Libya Al-Ahrar TV that they had requested a delay of two more days (until September 11) to reconvene.
