Fears of maritime hostility in Libya between Moscow and Washington

Jonathan Winer, the former US special envoy to Libya, has commented on the American position regarding the increasing Russian military activities in Libya.

Winer stated that the American administration took this threat seriously and that keeping Russia out of the Mediterranean was a major strategic goal for the United States, adding that if Russia obtains ports in Libya, this would give it the ability to spy on the entire European Union.

The American Al Hurra channel published Weiner’s comments where he pointed out that the problem for the US is that Russia is providing military assistance that the United States cannot provide due to Haftar’s failed attempt to overthrow the internationally recognized government in Tripoli.

Winer also admitted that Washington is not ready to discuss sanctions, so there is no clear cost to Haftar in switching to Putin’s camp.
