Interior Minister asks armed forces to withdraw from checkpoints across Libya

The Interior Minister of the Government of National Unity, Emad Al-Trabelsi, said Tuesday in a press conference from Tripoli that the armed forces from east, west and south of Libya are not allowed to man checkpoints on public roads, asking them to withdraw; effective immediately.

Al-Trabelsi added that there would be an expanded security and military meeting next week to issue final orders regarding security checkpoints across Libya, reiterating that no security units “have the right to set up patrols or checkpoints on roads without direct permits from the relevant Head of Security Directorate.”

Al-Trabelsi criticized the ongoing harassment against truck drivers and other citizens traveling across the country, saying the Interior Ministry would be prohibiting security units from setting up patrols without prior permissions.

Truck drivers went on strike on January 13, asking fot a number of demands for them to be able to continue to work on the road.  They specifically singled out the need for ending the harassment and misbehavior of patrols and checkpoints against them.
