The commander of joint operations room of the Government of National Accord (GNA) Osama Juwaili said they had seized control of the majority of Al-Watiya Airbase in western Libya as part of Operation Asefat Al-Salam (Peace Storm).
According to Juwaili, who spoke to Libya Alahrar Wednesday morning, several militia fighters under Khalifa Haftar’s command had been captured as GNA forces continued to comb through the airbase.
Meanwhile, the spokesman for the Libyan Army Mohammed Gununu said they had launched Operation Asefat Al-Salam (Peace Storm) in order to respond to Haftar militias’ repeated attacks on civilians in Tripoli.
Since they announced commitment to a humanitarian halt of hostilities a few days ago, Haftar’s militias have been carrying out violent rocket attacks on civilian neighborhoods in Tripoli with 12 casualties being registered – six deaths, including women and children – besides other casualties in Wednesday morning attacks.
