The Western Coast Military Zone – under the command of the Government of National Unity – announced launching a military operation in Al-Zawiya to impose security, establish stability, and target suspicious dens of drugs and smuggling.
The Zone issued a statement calling on Al-Zawiya residents to stay away from suspicious places and dens, as they would be targets for its ongoing operations in the city and the cities of the western coast. It also stressed the need for residents to adhere to the issued warnings to preserve their safety.
The Zone said that its forces had all the necessary capabilities and means and would not stop until “the eradication of the sources of chaos and organized crime.”
Al-Zawiya has been witnessing security chaos and armed clashes from time to time, the most recent of which are violent clashes that have led to burning some of the tanks of Al-Zawiya oil refinery in mid-December, which prompted the National Oil Corporation to declare force majeure, in addition to reports indicating the region’s activity in human and fuel smuggling as well as drug trafficking.
