Suppression and mismanagement… Amnesty International comments on the Derna tragedy

Amnesty International said that the Libyan authorities refrained from investigating the responsibility of the influential military and political parties for the catastrophic death toll in the tragedy of the collapse of the Derna dams.

The organization added in a recent report that the Libyan authorities did not guarantee that all those affected were given equal opportunities to obtain compensation.

The report indicated that Haftar’s forces, which control the region, and the Government of National Unity failed to issue adequate warnings and take other essential measures to mitigate risks before the storm hit, leading to the collapse of the two dams.

The report also pointed out the mismanagement of the response and failure to investigate the responsibility of those in positions of authority in order to protect people’s rights.

Amnesty International accused Haftar’s forces of suppressing people because they criticized the authorities’ lack of preparedness and poor response to the crisis.

The report described Haftar’s forces as increasing the level of its brutal methods to suppress any opposition to them in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.
