UN presents proposal for recovery and sustainable development facility in Libya

The Minister of Local Government, Badr Al-Deen Al-Toumi, discussed with United Nations’ (UN) officials a UN proposal to establish a recovery and sustainable development facility run by the UN Development Program (UNDP) in Libya.

The discussion of the new facility came during a meeting for Al-Toumi and the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya, Georgette Gagnon, with the participation of the UNDP Resident Representative, and the program team in Libya, in addition to representatives of other major Libyan institutions.

“The attendees reviewed examples of similar successful experiences in Iraq, Uzbekistan and other countries. The meeting provided an opportunity to better understand how trust funds administered by the UN work in crisis contexts, in cooperation with development partners. Other experts from the UNDP Regional Office for Arab States and the United Nations Office of Multi-Partner Trust Funds also participated in this meeting to review the mechanisms of the proposed facility.” The UNDP said in a statement.

According to the UN program, this facility is a way for allocating resources in a coordinated, systematic and sustainable manner in order to advance recovery efforts and coordinated reconstruction in Derna and other areas affected by floods in the short and medium terms.
