Libya’s representative to the United Nations, Taher El Sonni, spoke on behalf of the Arab and Islamic Group in the General Assembly, stating that the victims of Gaza are often seen as mere numbers, forgetting that they carry a story, and behind them are families, friends, and dreams that have faded. He added that history is being written and this human tragedy will remain a disgrace on the forehead of those who participated in it, supported it, or remained silent about it, whatever the justifications.
El Sonni pointed out that the only fair solution is to end the occupation and establish an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. He expressed his confidence in the ability of the Palestinian people to withstand and reminded the international community of its responsibilities.
The representative also condemned the occupation’s aggression, which he described as a deliberate and flagrant violation of moral standards and international humanitarian law, amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity, and even genocide. He questioned how an occupier could have the right to self-defense while denying the Palestinian people their right to defend themselves.
El Sonni highlighted that the aggression began directly targeting hospitals and, health facilities and the horrific scenes in the Al-Shifa Complex are clear evidence of that. He called on the world to wake up and end the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
In conclusion, Al-Sunni said, “Shame on you, and history will write that we are talking now while children and women are dying under the rubble, and there are still those who justify and defend massacres”.
