25 candidates eliminated from presidential race in Libya, including Gaddafi

The Libyan High National Elections Commission (HNEC) has rejected the submissions of 25 presidential candidates for failing to meet the requirements of candidacy, keeping hopes alive for 73 candidates, including controversial ones like Khalifa Haftar, who is implicated in coups against legitimacy, war on civilians, destruction of public and private properties and displacing a large number of east region’s residents.

Among the eliminated candidates is Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi and the Head of former General National Congress Nuri Abu Sahmain, in addition to Libyan comedian, Hatem Al-Kour and others.

The candidates have the right to appeal their rejection by the HNEC at the judiciary in the few coming hours as the HNEC prepares to lead the country to a very controversial vote on December 24, with doubts being cast on whether or not the eliminated candidates or even the ones competing would accept the results.
