IOM affirms that settling foreign migrants in Libya is not an objective

The Minister of Local Government Badr al-Din Al-Toumi discussed with the Regional Director of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Othman al-Bilbisi, coordination and cooperation to support local development projects and launch initiatives to create job opportunities for youth and empower women in local administration units.

According to the Ministry of Local Government, Al-Toumi stressed the importance of building effective partnerships with the IOM regarding developing policies related to migration, crisis management and disaster prediction in order to ensure the achievement of sustainable local development.

The Minister also explained that local development and job creation projects aim to create job places for citizens that may benefit irregular immigrants with skilled labor. For his part, the Regional Director of the IOM stressed the organization’s commitment to supporting national efforts in the field of migration management and achieving sustainable development.

Al-Bilbisi indicated that the organization does not seek to resettle irregular migrants, but rather works on the voluntary return of migrants to their countries of origin. Al-Bilbisi stressed his aspiration to enhance cooperation with the Ministry in order to enable local administration units to contribute to the management and monitoring of this issue in a way that achieves the desired goals of both sides.
