Libya’s Parliament, State Council: Foreign embassies’ statement “intervention in internal affairs”

The Libyan High Council of State and House of Representatives have both condemned the statement of the five foreign embassies (UK, US, Germany, Italy, and France) and rendered it as an intervention in Libya’s internal affairs.

The High Council of State and House of Representatives have each said in a separate statement that the instruction of the foreign embassies to the Government of National Unity not to replace the incumbents of the High National Elections Commission and other relevant bodies in Libya was a violation of sovereignty and a blatant intervention in domestic decisions.

The High Council of State said violation of Libya’s sovereignty is not only the presence of foreign mercenaries on the ground but also the attempts by certain countries to impose certain policies and agenda on the GNU.

“Ambassadors mustn’t work beyond the limits of their jobs in Libya as per the diplomatic ethics and rules. They must abide by the laws of the host country and never intervene in its internal affairs.” The High Council of State warned.

While the House of Representatives reiterated that the statement of the five foreign countries wouldn’t bring about support to the ongoing track of unity and reconciliation in Libya, adding that such a foreign intervention is absolutely rejected by all Libyans.

Meanwhile, in a joint statement Friday, the embassies said they believed that “now is not the time for any disruptive changes at the relevant bodies which enable that preparation to take place within the timescale set out by UNSCR 2570.”
