The Derna tragedy brings Washington back to the Libyan arena to confront Moscow

“France 24” channel reported that the tragedy of Derna has brought the United States back to the Libyan scene, which may change the rules of the game in the region.

The channel added that Moscow took advantage of this disaster and pledged to help Khalifa Haftar through a visit by the Kremlin’s Deputy Defense Minister to the east of the country after the recent floods, claiming Russia is seeking “geostrategic” revenge.

The channel mentioned that Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus Bek Yevkurov, who met Khalifa Haftar, is Moscow’s man in Africa, and he has made several trips to the continent, especially to former French colonies that have experienced coups such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

The channel pointed out that Yevkurov visited Libya when the leader of the “Wagner” military group Yevgeny Prigozhin was killed in a plane crash near Moscow on August 23.

The channel said that the Derna disaster brought Khalifa Haftar back to the center of the “Great Game” in North Africa, indicating that flood victims are at risk of turning into pawns.
