US reiterates support for Libya’s unity government to hold elections

The US Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Joey Hood, has stressed that Washington supports the Libyan Government of National Unity in its quest to hold elections in December 2021.

The US Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs added in an interview with Al Jazeera that Washington also supports the efforts of the Government of National Unity to remove all kinds of foreign intervention in the country before going to general elections.

Joey Hood remarked that the political process in Libya must be Libyan-led and Libyan-owned with assistance from the UN Support Mission in the country, reiterating that the US stands with the Libyan people in their aspirations for peace and prosperity as well as their willingness to elect their leaders.

The US has more than once stressed the need for the Government of National Unity to hold elections on time as per the roadmap of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, which set December 24th, 2021 as the date for general elections.
