Human Rights Watch accuses “Frontex” of facilitating forced return of migrants to Libya

Human Rights Watch accused the European Border Agency “Frontex” of facilitating the Libyan Coast Guard’s interception of irregular migrants in Maltese waters in 2021.

The organization said that the European Union missed an opportunity to hold Frontex accountable after the General Court ruled that the agency would continue being able to avoid scrutiny on how it conducts aerial surveillance in the Mediterranean.

Human Rights Watch indicated that the lack of transparency would undermine public interest in holding European Union institutions accountable and would also limit the oversight exercised by civil society, which is entitled to obtain information about enabling Libyan forces to intercept.
