UN Secretary General warns of plunging Libya into more destructive conflict

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in his address to the African Union 33rd Summit, has warned that Libya could slide into a more destructive conflict.

Guterres added on Sunday in Addis Ababa that it is necessary for the Libyan parties to find national solutions to confront the internal challenges.

“Despite the promised made in Berlin on January 19, the foreign intervention remains active in Libya and the continuous influx of arms and return of the military clashes on the ground complicated the humanitarian situation in Libya.” Guterres added.

Guterres has called on the Security Council to have a unified and strong stance on Libya.

The deputy spokesman for the Secretary General Farhan Haq said Guterres and his special representative in Libya, Ghassan Salame, need support from Libya’s neighboring countries as well as all members states at the Security Council to broker a solution in the country.
