The government designated by the House of Representatives (HoR) in eastern Libya said that about 40.000 Sudanese nationals fled the fighting in their country and moved to the Libyan city of Al-Kufra – near the border with Sudan.
Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been engaged in a war that has left about 13.900 people dead and displaced more than 8.5 million Sudanese nationals.
The government’s Minister of Health, Othman Abdeljalil, said after he had paid a visit to displaced Sudanese nationals in Al-Kufra that it was difficult to know the exact number of these displaced individuals due to the continuing waves of people coming from Sudan.
“Discovering the actual number requires accurate surveys. We have tasked medical teams to conduct examinations and tests for the displaced to diagnose their conditions and provide them with healthcare services.” Abdeljalil said.
He added that his government – a parallel body to the internationally-recognized Government of National Unity that is seated in Tripoli – would provide treatment and medical supplies to all patients, especially those with serious or contagious diseases.
The Libyan capital, Tripoli, hosted in late February the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, and the Commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo (Hemedti), upon the invitation of the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity Abdul Hamid Dbeibah to discuss the possibility of reaching an end to the war.
