Amnesty International criticizes slow investigations by Athens regarding the sinking of an immigrant boat

Amnesty International reported that Greece has not achieved any significant progress in investigations related to the sinking of a boat that set off from Libya off its coast six months ago.

The organization called for a comprehensive investigation into the allegations against the Greek Coast Guard and for the prosecution of any official for whom there is sufficient evidence of involvement in the sinking of the boat.

A fishing boat had set off from the coast of Tobruk last June, carrying seven hundred and fifty migrants, and sank off the coast of Greece, leading to the death of more than six hundred.

On November 11, Greece announced the launch of an “independent investigation” into the case according to the Associated Press. Since the incident, Athens has been subjected to several accusations, some of which were from survivors, stating that the Greek Coast Guard deliberately sank the boat by neglecting the situation.

Moreover, the United Nations called for an investigation into the Greek authorities’ handling of the disaster, amid allegations that more action should have been taken earlier to launch a large-scale rescue attempt.
