Congo hosts a Libyan reconciliation meeting .. including representatives of Haftar and Saif

The Republic of the Congo is hosting a meeting on Libya concerning reconciliation tracks on the 19th -20th of July. The meeting is sponsored by the African Union AU according to international reports.

Russian news agency Sputnik has claimed the meeting will include different political actors in Libya including representatives of Khalifa Haftar and Saif Gaddafi, both of whom have arrest warrants issued against them by the Attorney General. The potential participation of Saif Gaddafi and Haftar in anticipated presidential elections last year was seen as a very controversial step by many national stakeholders, and perceived as one of the possible reasons that holding such elections was not feasible.

The meeting organized this week in the Congolese capital Brazzaville according to Sputnik, aims to find a consensus among participants on establishing a “founding committee” in order to develop a vision and a mechanism for completing the track of national reconciliation, within the framework of the initiative proposed by the Presidential Council.

The meeting is to host also representatives of the Presidential Council, High Council of State (HCS) and the House of Representatives (HoR). The Presidential Council had initiated last year what it called the Strategic vision for a national reconciliation project.
