Egypt and the USA discuss the Libyan situation

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed with his American counterpart, Antony Blinken, on Monday the political developments in Libya.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the two sides discussed over the phone the growing challenges in the region and means of collaboration regarding common interests. The ministry had commended the day before the joint statement signed by the head of the Presidential Council Mohammed Menfi, the Speaker of the House of Representative (HoR) Aqila Saleh and the military general Khalifa Haftar, which was issued in Benghazi

In Monday’s meeting, the Egyptian side stressed the importance of including the heads of the HoR and the High Council of State (HCS) in consultations to move forward with the political process in Libya, claiming Cairo’s support for state institutions in seeking to arrange simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections at the soonest.

In a previous statement, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the role of the HoR and the HCS as “pivotal” calling on on all international stakeholders to not take any measures that would bypass the role of these institutions.
