Gunmen seize archaeological site near Libya’s Sirte

An armed group has taken hold of the archaeological site of Sultan outside Sirte in central Libya and the Bureau of Archaeology of the city, Libyan News Agency reported on Saturday.

Sultan archaeological site is 60 km east of Sirte. It harbors a museum and other archaeological facilities that are home to many antiquities and artifacts.

The report said, citing sources that preferred to be unnamed, that the gunmen who stormed the site prevented workers from doing their jobs, as they positioned themselves in the area.

The sources called on relevant authorities to take swift action against the armed group and protect Sultan archaeological site as well as the Bureau of Archaeology.
