Libya, EU review situation of illegal immigration, border security

The Libyan Interior Minister Emad Al-Trabelsi discussed with the ambassador of the European Union (EU) Nicola Orlando cooperation in security and the issue of illegal immigration as well as the voluntary repatriation operations for illegal immigrants to their countries of origin.

The Libyan Interior Ministry said the two sides also reviewed on Sunday in Tripoli the EU’s support for the efforts exerted by the Interior Ministry in securing southern borders to limit the influx of illegal immigrants. 

Meanwhile, Orlando said on X platform that he had a productive meeting in Tripoli with Al-Trabelsi and discussed the follow-up to the recent EU mission on immigration and reviewed opportunities to expand cooperation on human-rights-compliant immigration and border management, including in the south.

The EU ambassador added that Al-Trabelsi had updated him on Interior Ministry’s plans to fight human smuggling and ensure stability. While he stressed the EU’s readiness to advance their shared objectives, reiterating that they had agreed to remain in close contact in the coming months.
