Libyan AG: Mayor of floods-ravaged Derna to be jailed over dams’ negligence

The Libyan Attorney General (AG), Al-Siddiq al-Sour, has issued orders to jail Derna mayor, Abdulmonem Al-Ghaithi, the current Head and ex-Head of Water Resources Authority and other officials directly involved in the negligence leading to the rupture of Derna dams.

The Attorney General said his office had field a criminal case against 16 officials responsible for the management of Libyan dams’ facilities.

“Derna mayor gave no evidence to counter the charges of power abuse and negligence in his position as an official tasked with using the allocated budget for the rebuilding of Derna city.” The Attorney General said.

He added that his office had asked for the necessary procedures to initiate investigations into the behavior and involvement of the rest of individuals who were involved in the negligence leading to the floods in Derna, as well as those who abused the funds allocated for rebuilding the city.

On September 20, Al-Sour confirmed to Libya Alahrar TV channel the listing of a number of individuals to be probed on accusations related to the rupture of Derna dams.

Al-Sour added that his office had initiated investigations in Derna, Benghazi and Tripoli, vowing that results would be announced as soon as possible.

The spokesman for the High Committee for Emergency and Rapid Response of the government designated by the House of Representatives (HoR), Mohammed El Jarih, has announced that 3,868 people have been officially registered as deaths caused by floods, saying in a press conference that this number is likely to increase.
