Middle East Eye said the United Arab Emirates had worked secretly to ensure Khalifa Haftar’s control over Libya in order to boost its influence and leverage in the region.
In a report titled “Can the UAE’s coup attempts in Libya and Yemen succeed?”, the Middle East Eye said since 2014, the UAE embraced Haftar in an attempt to repeat the Egyptian scenario to set up an authoritarian military regime in Libya.
The report said the UAE had played a pivotal role in forming Haftar’s militias and helped him in his war on Tripoli, adding that Abu Dhabi was behind his withdrawal from Moscow talks under the auspices of Turkey and Russia in last January.
