350 affected families from Derna are residing in temporary camps

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has alerted the authorities in Shahat to the presence of 350 families affected by Derna residing in unofficial temporary camps.

The OCHA report also stated that more than 30,000 people received humanitarian aid in the affected areas during the second week of November. The report further noted that child protection partners completed a rapid assessment of child protection needs in areas affected by the floods. Signs of psychosocial distress are the most concerning.

According to preliminary results, the most common risk is psychological distress (90% of respondents), noting that separated and missing children constitute another major source of concern for affected communities, especially in Derna, where the numbers that are officially recorded are less than as indicated by the assessment results. This may be due to a lack of clarity regarding the definition of unaccompanied and separated children, or due to lack of reporting.

In addition, the report stated that humanitarian partners rehabilitated a well in the city of Al Bayda to address pollution and provide access to drinking water for more than 15,000 people. However, local authorities in Al Bayda reported an outbreak of diarrhea with 186 cases within one week and advised residents to avoid water wells.

Humanitarian partners working in the field of water, sanitation, hygiene and health in Al Bayda are following up on the reports.
