AFP: Bathily’s resignation is a sign of the failure of reconciliation efforts in Libya

Agence France-Presse has reported that the sudden resignation of the UN envoy to Libya, Abdullah Bathily, is the latest sign of the failure of reconciliation efforts in the country.

The agency quoted analysts stating that Bathily’s resignation was not shocking “given that the process he was leading had been completely stalled for several months,” accusing Egypt of undermining his efforts since its policy conflicted with his.

Analysts suggested that Batelli’s American deputy, Stephanie Khoury, would become a temporary special envoy, allowing the United States to lead the UN mission in Libya without having to face the Russian veto in the Security Council.

On Tuesday, Bathily announced his resignation, indicating in press statements at the United Nations headquarters that it would be difficult to reach a political solution in the future, warning that Libya had become an arena for conflict and was on its way to losing its sovereignty.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres accepted Bathily’s resignation, stressing that the United Nations will continue to support the political process.
