Neighborhoods in Ubari damaged by torrents of rainwater, Mayor says

The mayor of Ubari city in southwestern Libya, Ahmed Matko, said the city had rested a while after a heavily-rain-pouring Sunday that caused damage to over 1000 houses peopled by about 11,000 persons in one neighborhood in the city, citing that fact that the houses were built by mud bricks.

The mayor said the damage was only material and casualties had been reported after the heavy rain and torrents of rainwater, which also caused some damage to Al-Mashroa Al-Janoubi neighborhood and an educational institution in the city.

Matko also indicated that there was a power outage in some neighborhoods in the city as rainwater submerged Power Station 66, which has no windows to keep the water out. He said electricity would be cut off in the entire city if the Power Station was not repaired, knowing that water supplied had also been cut off, however; he said maintenance workers were dispatched to the Station on Monday.

Four houses collapsed in Al-Mashroa neighborhood in Ubari city on Sunday due to heavy rainfall and the beginning of rainwater torrents, but no casualties were reported, according to the Emergency and Ambulance Apparatus.
