The Libyan Embassy in China: 5 Libyan prisoners were released during the last two years

Chargé d’Affairs of the Libyan Embassy in China, Khaled Al-Sayeh, said that the number of Libyan prisoners in China for whom a release order was issued during the years 2022-2023 was 5 prisoners.

Al-Sayeh explained to the Libyan News Agency that four prisoners had been deported to Libya, including a prisoner in the city of Shanghai, who had finished his prison term.

He mentioned that three other prisoners were deported in agreement with the Chinese authorities, before they were referred to the Chinese courts for trial, noting that they were still in the first evidentiary stage.

Al-Sayeh added that there is a fifth prisoner who was sentenced to 7 years in prison and a fine estimated at 30,000 Yuan, noting that his trial procedures ended in 2023, and his sentence was confirmed.

The Chargé d’Affairs indicated that the approval of the Chinese authorities had been obtained to deport him and complete the remainder of his sentence inside Libya, stressing that the Libyan embassy is in direct contact with the prisoner to follow up on his situation.

The issue of deporting the prisoner depends on several procedures, including the signing of a memorandum of understanding for reciprocal treatment with the Chinese side according to the Libyan diplomat, who stressed that the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice are working on preparing the memorandum.

Al-Sayeh added that there are a number of Chinese detainees in Libya, including those imprisoned on the grounds of counterfeiting electronic currency, and that a number of them were released.
